Hope in Destruction

Adeline Johnson

I am hopeful because the Earth has seen this before,
Seen this before and moved on.
Extremes cannot last, and will fade to life.
The Earth has seen it,
Seen that fires will burn, yet are sure to die,
Ice will melt, yet is sure to freeze again,
And if the land is swallowed,
Then oceans form and life returns.
And if our attempts at survival fail us,
And the fires burn us,
And the ice freezes us,
And the oceans drown us.
Then we, the parasites of our planet will be gone.
And the Earth will move on.

Hope is a Banyan Tree

My hope is huge
My hope is strong
My hope is free
Like a banyan tree
Engraving its broad arms into the soil
Swaying in the warm breeze
Kids laughing, swinging on the wide branches
All in Hawaii

You can feel it’s hope
The banyan trees
But there’s a twist
I am paying my respects
For it’s still there,
No care
Cackling
Crackling
Red
Flames gulp Lahaina
In one pieces
For it’s standing above the sparks
Glimmering in the dark
Just like my hope
No one can stop it

They may throw their words like I throw a baseball
They may hate me
They may break me
But my hope will still rise and be free
Just like that banyan tree

It stands above the rubble
Above the hate
All to protect hope
Hope that people in Maui will be alright
Hope that Lahaina will become the joyful and vibrant place it once was
Hope that the community will grow even stronger because of this misfortune
Like the banyan tree

For the place around it may be dead
It’s still standing
Green leaves emerging through the burnt branches
Pieces coming together
Like a puzzle
Each piece
Free
Tall
Strong
Huge
Thriving
Like a banyan tree

Nature’s Hope

Dirty waves wash plastic ashore,
Littered with speckled foam,
Then I see you, cleaning the ocean with a heart that is
true, You, are my hope.

A flower garden crushed with shards of glass,
Uncared for, and overgrown,
Then I see you, clean it up on cue,
You, are my hope.
A tree, bleeding sappy blood,
